Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

Clinical Significance

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein-like gonadotropin secreted by the pituitary cells that promotes the conversion of cholesterol into sex hormones in gonadal cells. In females, it works in conjunction with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to promote follicle maturation, secretion of estrogen, ovulation, and the production and maintenance of the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone and estrogen. In males, luteinizing hormone contributes to the synthesis and release of testosterone from testicular interstitial cells.
