Plasmin-antiplasmin Complex (PIC)

Clinical Significance

The plasmin-antiplasmin complex (PIC) is a molecular complex formed when plasmin, an enzyme responsible for breaking down fibrin clots (fibrinolysis), is inhibited by α-2 antiplasmin, a major inhibitor of plasmin in the bloodstream.

Elevated levels of PIC in the blood indicate increased fibrinolytic activity. Measuring PIC levels can help diagnose and monitor diseases related to abnormal fibrinolysis.  High PIC levels are associated with conditions like DIC, liver disease, and certain cancers.
