Clinical Significance

    Thrombomodulin (TM) is a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of endothelial cells, which line the blood vessels.  It plays a crucial role in the regulation of blood coagulation.

    Dysregulation or deficiencies in thrombomodulin function can lead to thrombotic disorders.  Low levels of thrombomodulin are associated with conditions such as sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and other inflammatory or vascular diseases.
