Clinical Significance

BNP is a biologically active protein with a half-life of 20 minutes and a stability time of only 1 hour in vitro, and its level is easily influenced by the drug of choice. It is difficult for clinicians to determine whether elevated BNP levels are the result of drug therapy or cardiac dysfunction. The inactive NT-proBNP has a half-life of 60-120 minutes and is stable in vitro for up to 24 hours. It has higher sensitivity and is not affected by rh-BNP, making it easier for clinicians to accurately detect early and mild heart failure.
