The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released in the top journal Natural Communication an 11-year surveillance survey on respiratory infections from 106 cities, 277 sentinel hospitals and 92 reference laboratories. While improving the active surveillance network for acute respiratory infections, the etiology of acute respiratory infections causing the Chinese population and their epidemiological characteristics were identified.
The results showed that 34.8% of patients with acute respiratory infections were positive for at least one viral infection, 22.8% were positive for at least one bacterial infection, and 23.3% had co-infections. The highest rates of viral positivity (46.9%) and bacterial positivity (30.9%) were found in children under 5 years of age and in school-age children.
Among the eight viruses causing acute respiratory infections, the positive rates (%) are, in descending order: influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, coronavirus, boca virus, and metapneumovirus. Among the 9 bacterial respiratory tract infections, the positive rates (%) from high to low are streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, group A streptococcus.
