25 April is World Malaria Day. It was instituted by WHO Member States during the sixtieth World Health Assembly of May 2007. It aims to promote the global malaria prevention and control. April 25, 2008 marks the first World Malaria Day.
The lasted data from WHO's World Malaria Report 2021 have shown that in 2020, there were estimated 241 million new cases of malaria and 627,000 malaria-related deaths. This represents about 14 million more cases in 2020 compared to 2019, and 69 000 more deaths. Approximately two thirds of these additional deaths (47 000) were linked to disruptions in the provision of malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment during the pandemic. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry the heaviest malaria burden, accounting for about 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of all deaths in 2020.
What is malaria?
Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat. P. falciparum is the deadliest malaria parasite and the most prevalent on the African continent. P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa.
The first symptoms – fever, headache and chills – usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite and may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within a period of 24 hours.
Malaria is transmitted by anopheles mosquitoes. The mosquito bites a malaria patient or insect carrier, and then bites a normal person, passing the malaria parasite to the latter. In congenital malaria, infected mothers transmit parasites to their child for placenta injuring or baby’s wound contaminate by a malarial mother during delivery. Also, it may be infected after transfuse blood with malaria parasites.
Prevention of malaria
To repel and kill mosquitoes and prohibit malarial patients donate blood are the best ways to prevent malarial. If you are going abroad, it is essential to find out whether there is a risk of malaria in the place or places you are going, and consider prevention before going. It is not to do outside activities during peak mosquito activity ( at dusk or at night). If must, wear long sleeve clothing and apply insect repellent to exposed skin.
Products of malaria diagnosis in HeavyBio
Clinical diagnosis of malaria mainly through blood smear detection、 antigen test and nucleic acid test, among which antigen test has been applied widely in malaria diagnosis because of its convenient, rapid and low-cost. It was estimated by WHO that 412 million rapid diagnostic kits were sold globally in 2018. Rapid diagnostic kits increasingly become the most common way to diagnose suspected malaria cases in public health facilities in sub-Saharan Africa.
The performance of rapid diagnostic kits mainly determined by its core raw material. As a professional supplier of in vitro diagnostic raw material, HeavyBio’s independent research and development products of malaria are superior performance, which are one of the best choices.
